HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R936’s crew from Caernarfon, Wales have been presented with the prestigious Prince Phillip Helicopter Rescue Award for a lifesaving operation during a mountain blizzard.
The rescue involved a walker who had suffered head and spinal injuries at Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) in Snowdonia, Wales on 18 November 2024. With low cloud, fading light and poor visibility, the treacherous situation called for precise and exacting airmanship to safely descend.
Their outstanding efforts make it the second year in a row that the team have received the honour.
“Contending with extreme weather, zero visibility, and a casualty in a critical condition, the team effected an outstanding rescue that undoubtedly saved a life,” said Chief Coastguard Paddy O’Callaghan.
He added: “It’s testament to the skill and professionalism of R936’s crew that they’ve been presented with the Prince Philip Helicopter Rescue Award a second time in two years.”
