Hughes Aerospace today announced the latest enhancement to Hughes Flight Intelligence, the company's integrated aviation planning and operational awareness platform, with the introduction of Slackline Awareness—the aviation industry's first capability to incorporate a worldwide database of more than 7,000 known and reported slackline locations directly into preflight planning and moving-map route analysis.
Hughes Flight Intelligence is Hughes Aerospace's integrated operational intelligence platform that combines the Hughes VFR Prediction Tool with weather intelligence, aeronautical charts, NOTAMs, FAA Weather Cameras, icing forecasts, daylight information, operational risk analysis, and other pilot-focused safety technologies into a single preflight planning environment. Designed by pilots for pilots, the platform transforms complex operational data into actionable intelligence before every flight.
The newest capability, Slackline Awareness, adds another important layer of situational awareness for low-altitude flight operations. Slacklines—high-strength webbing suspended between trees, poles, towers, or other structures—are often nearly invisible from the air and can present a significant hazard during low-altitude operations. The Hughes App now integrates more than 7,000 known and reported slackline locations worldwide directly into route planning, allowing pilots to identify potential hazards before departure.
Because the Hughes App operates worldwide, Hughes Flight Intelligence supports helicopter and fixed-wing pilots conducting emergency medical services (EMS), utility, firefighting, law enforcement, military, offshore, agricultural, aerial survey, flight training, and general aviation operations around the globe.
"Every flight begins with decisions," said Chris Baur, pilot and Chief Executive Officer of Hughes Aerospace and Co-Chair of the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team (USHST). "Hughes Flight Intelligence was built by pilots to bring the critical information needed for safe flight into one place. Every enhancement we develop has one purpose—to help pilots identify hazards sooner, better understand risk, and return home safely after every flight."
Powered by the Hughes VFR Prediction Tool, Hughes Flight Intelligence integrates operational intelligence from multiple sources, including:
- Automated route analysis
- Slackline Awareness with more than 7,000 known and reported locations worldwide
- Interactive moving maps with geo-referenced VFR, IFR, and terminal procedure charts
- Real-time weather, METARs, TAFs, radar, and forecasts
- NOTAMs searched along the entire planned route—not just departure and destination airports
- FAA Weather Camera integration
- Day, night, sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, and NVG planning information
- Icing forecasts
- Flight recording and playback
- Safety Management System (SMS) reporting
- Helicopter procedures, including ZK Routes
- FAA reference publications
- Route planning using airports, heliports, or precise latitude and longitude
The Hughes App also supports the mission of the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team by providing direct access to safety resources, educational materials, and complimentary USHST membership enrollment.
Hughes Aerospace continues to invest in expanding Hughes Flight Intelligence as part of its long-standing commitment to advancing aviation safety. The Hughes App provides pilots worldwide with sophisticated operational planning and situational awareness capabilities that continue to evolve through innovation and real-world operational experience. Every enhancement reflects Hughes Aerospace's commitment to helping pilots make better-informed decisions before every flight.
"Our philosophy is simple—every pilot deserves access to the best safety information available," said Alyce Shingler, Chief Operating Officer of Hughes Aerospace. "We continue investing in Hughes Flight Intelligence because practical technology helps pilots better identify hazards, improve situational awareness, and reduce operational risk. Every enhancement reflects our commitment to advancing aviation safety through innovation and to supporting the pilots and operators who depend on these tools every day."
The Hughes App is available for iPhone and iPad.
