After hiking into a hilly open field, I photographed Cal Fire's Firehawk dropping on the Baxter Fire in Murrieta, California. The lighting and angle were beautiful, which worked well for this close up photograph.

This was a set up shoot in the desert near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park of VMM-362 "Ugly Angels" after being newly painted and designed by Shayne Meder. Dave Nenna also helped with the painting. A really dynamic location was selected and the crew from MCAS Miramar did an awesome job flying exactly where we wanted them too. Only a week before this shot, it was in the hanger being painted.

My son and I were photographing helicopters picking up water at the Encino Reservoir for the Palisades Fire, when we noticed a new fire at the Victory Trail area - Kenneth Fire. With traffic, it took us almost an hour to get there. We decided to hike a trail and climb a medium size hill where the fire fighters were working. The helicopters were going to a water tank bellow the hill so we were able to get eye level photographs. In this photograph of Coulson's Sikorsky S-61 coming back from dropping on the Kenneth Fire, you can see smoke from the massive Palisades Fire in the background. The city below is West Hills, California.

It was amazing watching these highly skilled pilots navigate a small canyon at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California. These Army AH-4 Apache Attack helicopters were from the 4th Battalion, 6th Cavalry. Fortunately, I was able to drive a sandy dirt road to the location and climb a very slippery, but short hill, because the hike in 106° weather would have been quite difficult.

We got the fantastic opportunity to meet up with Coyote 50, the Viper Color Bird that Shane Meder designed and painted at MCAS Pendleton less than a week after it was finished. Dave Nenna assisted her in the painting. We found a really beautiful location near Agua Caliente, California. We climbed a small mountain so that we could be above or at eye level as they flew by. The temperature was in the 90's and the mountain was slippery.

Best way to know what the weather is doing in Alaska is to see it with your own eyes. Thanks to a series of wireless cameras, we can do this from the comfort of our break room. Pilots Gareth, Kelly, and Alex are assembling 2 of our wx cameras. These are located along some of our common flight routes.

Some of my favorite shots of the year. Finally at the end of the summer season, we had a few clear nights with high KPI. Very excited to catch the light dancing behind the Astar. These helicopters work hard during the summer, they deserve to rest and enjoy the light show.

Film photography is a dying art, thankfully it's making a comeback! I don't believe I am very good with film, but it's fun to shoot with. Even though it's B&W, I really enjoyed this shot of a returning Astar back to the waterfront base in Skagway.

Cal Fires's Firehawk drops water on the Crossing Fire in Aguanga, California. We drove up and down a really rough dirt road trying to get in the right location. We had areas where the road was narrow, so we made sure when we were in those areas, no fire trucks were coming. We got sprayed with retardant on this fire.

This photograph was actually taken at night - 8:18 in early June. I used my Nikon 70mm to 200mm f/2.8, at 200mm, and with a setting of1/200th of a second at f/2.8. I used an ISO of 6400 and with Photoshop's Denoise in Camera Raw, it eliminated all the noise. I was amazed at the quality of the image. The ducks in the photograph really add to the uniqueness and photo illustrative quality. Coulson's Chinook was picking up water at Hesperia Lake Park for the Ranch Fire.

San Diego Gas and Electric's Blackhawk helicopter drops water on the Henderson Fire in Pala, California. It was quite difficult to get to this mountain location where we were above, or at eye level, as various aircraft dropped. We had to go on private land and fortunately the owner gave us permission, and actually drove us to a better location in an all-terrain vehicle. Being able to photograph these highly skilled and brave pilots is such an honor and privilege.
