I did a special shoot of the United State Coast Guard Sikorsky MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter on the Otay Mountains in San Diego County, California. We got permission to drive on a BLM land dirt road which got me near the top of mountain. I then hiked up a brush filled hill to get to the right location. The road driving up was very bumpy and close to extremely steep drop offs. In the background are the cities of Otay Mesa and San Diego.

We set up a photo shoot with VMM-165 White Knights/Lady Aces newly painted color bird in a remote canyon in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. This photograph really highlights the beautiful design on the tail created and painted by Shayne Meder. Dave Nenna assisted her in the painting.

San Diego County Sherriff’s Bell 412 helicopter heads back to pick up water for the Henderson Fire in Pala, California. It was quite difficult to get to this mountain location where we were above, or at eye level, as various aircraft dropped. We had to go on private land and fortunately the owner gave us permission, and actually drove us to a better location in an all-terrain vehicle. Being able to photograph these highly skilled and brave pilots is such an honor and privilege.

We got permission to go on Hawks Landing Golf Course to get helicopters picking up water for the Eureka Fire in Joshua Tree, California. In fact, they were so nice that they even let us use a golf cart to get to the small lake Helicopter Transport Services' Skycrane pilots skillfully maneuvered between trees and houses to pick up water. I photographed at a low angle so that the rainbow could be included.

I got an amazing opportunity to photograph Army AH-4 Apache Attack helicopters from the 4th Battalion, 6th Cavalry flying through a desert canyon in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park near the town of Borrego Springs, California. Fortunately, I was able to drive a sandy dirt road to the location and climb a very slippery, but short hill, because the hike in 106° weather would have been quite difficult. Because the Apache was flying so low, I was able to include the shadow on the ground.
