The First AW149, produced in Poland has entered service with the 7th Aviation Squadron of the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

Poland signed a contract with Leonardo in July 2022 for 32 AW149 multi-role helicopters with the first five helicopters built at Leonardo's facility in Vergiate, Italy, to meet urgent requirements. The first two Italian-built units were delivered in October 2023.

The current delivery is the first from the new, localized production line at the Wytwórnia Sprzętu Komunikacyjnego PZL-Świdnik SA (WSK), who establish a production line for AW149 helicopters at the Świdnik facility in eastern Poland, which officially opened in June 2024. Deliveries of the remaining 21Polish built helicopters are scheduled to continue through 2029, with the new aircraft replacing the aging Mil Mi-2 'Hoplite' and some W-3PL Głuszec helicopters.

The AW149 is a medium multi-role military helicopter designed for a variety of missions, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and battlefield support. The Polish configuration of the helicopter will include guided/unguided rockets, missiles, observation systems, small arms, and self-defense systems.

The 7th Aviation Squadron of the 25th Air Cavalry Brigade, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz met with soldiers on the occasion of the first AW 149 support helicopter for the Land Forces leaving the Polish production line.

"It's always a great moment when new equipment arrives in the Polish Army. The 25th Air Cavalry Brigade received the first Polish made AW149 helicopter, manufactured by PZL Świdnik. It's a very good, well-equipped helicopter, manufactured in Poland. This demonstrates the military's need for continuity in operations equipment modification and transformation. This cannot be accomplished in one year, one term, two, or three. The orders we place now will often take several years to complete. Good things must be continued, modified, but not overturned. That is my motto," said the Deputy Prime Minister.
